Verismo.
If you simply look at the definition of the of the word, it means realism, from the Italian word "vero" meaning true (thank you Wikipedia).
And, as you've probably already read, Verismo is also the newest, and by far the biggest name in the single-cup coffee brewing industry.
By its name alone, Starbucks has already called out the rest of the single-cup coffee industry. Pretty much announcing, "the real single-cup home brewer has now arrived, the rest of you can take your cups, and discs and capsules and whatever else you're currently brewing your 'fake' coffee with and go home."
Over the next few weeks, we'll have more on the Starbucks Verismo and how it is about to turn the single-cup coffee industry on its ear, how things will play out with single-serve coffee giant (and current Starbucks partner) Green Mountain, and how this high-pressure single-serve machine stacks up against Keurig's new Vue Brewing System.
Before we get too carried away with things, we understand that the flashy headline is all about how Starbucks has turned around and 'spurned' Green Mountain, and what this move will do to Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR) stock price over the next few hours; but the Starbucks Verismo is in an entirely different single-cup brewing category than anything that Keurig has introduced to this point.
If the name is accurate, the Starbucks Verismo will bring the type of 'real,' at-home, single-cup coffee to the United States that the rest of the coffee-loving world has enjoyed for years via Nespresso. With an emerging single-cup brewing segment in the US, we truly feel that if there is anyone with the power to change the way people think about their coffee at home, its Starbucks.
With many of Keurig's patents expiring this Fall, the Starbucks Verismo will not be the last new single-cup coffee machine we profile here on the Shoffee Blog, but it sure has the potential to be the most exciting.
